On September 21, 2024, Genival Pereira da Silva, known for his leadership and dedication to Afro-religious traditions, celebrated one of the most important moments of his spiritual journey: 30 years since his initiation into the worship of Oxum. The celebration took place at his terreiro, with the presence of children, grandchildren, friends, and prominent members of the religious community, marking a milestone not only for him personally but also collectively for his spiritual house.
The Origin of the Religious Journey
The spiritual journey of Father Genival, known as Father Whashington de Oxum, began in Umbanda, at a terreiro located on Caminho do Urubu, along the Cachamorra road. After completing his initiation and spending 11 years in Umbanda, he was led to seek new paths. Through his sister’s recommendation, he met the Iyalorixá Margareth Labancan from the Efon nation, where he underwent initiation to Oxum. This moment marked the beginning of a journey of faith and commitment to the principles and traditions of Candomblé, leading him to the 30 years of devotion now being celebrated.
Babalorixá Eduardo do Ogum
Father Whashington's journey was guided by figures of great importance in his religious life. After completing his 21-year cycle in the worship of Oxum, he began to receive support and guidance from Father Eduardo do Ogum, his spiritual grandfather and advisor. Father Eduardo became a spiritual reference and a trusted friend, playing an essential role in his path and in strengthening his faith.
The Strength of the Yepondà Community
Several individuals were fundamental to the success of the event and the continuation of his spiritual journey. Among them, the babá efún of the house, Pablo de Ossaguian, who is the right hand of Oxum, his son Paulo de Yemanjá, Neuber de Aganjú, along with other children, grandchildren, ogãs, and ekedes, who together form the structure of the Yepondà house.
Resistance and Overcoming Amid Prejudice
This celebration gains even more significance when viewed in light of the struggles that Father Whashington and his community face daily against religious prejudice. In a country where Afro-Brazilian religions are still targets of intolerance, Father Whashington sees this achievement as a victory not only for himself but also for the community as a whole. Each act of devotion is a reaffirmation of the resistance and dignity of his faith, and the celebration is a tribute to the strength of his ancestry.
A Journey of Victory and Unity
"The celebration of 30 years of Oxum was more than just a simple party. It was a demonstration of strength, faith, and unity. Father Whashington, alongside his community, showed that the spiritual journey is filled with challenges, but also many victories. Surrounded by those who support and respect him, he celebrated his cycle of devotion and the continuity of a tradition that remains alive thanks to the strength of leaders like him."
